Originally this building housed Austin’s Cotton Exchange and had cotton bales on the main floor where the Paradise Cafe currently resides and the offices for brokers and buyers were overlooking the floor of the exchange on the second story It was later used as a market for produce, dry goods, groceries and clothing.

Rumor has is it, the Cotton Exchange on the corner of Sixth and Trinity was once a brothel shortly after it was erected in 1874. And “Nadine” was no other than the main ‘Madame’. It just so happens the Arc Angels, a blues rock back formed in Austin in the late 1990s, wrote their hit song, “Paradise Cafe” while dining at the Paradise Cafe and Bar when their hit song, “Sweet Nadine” was also released.
